A Halloween experience with Weedmaps

Updated: Oct 17

What’s spooky about marijuana? Weedmaps, one of the world’s largest cannabis media outlets, turned the parking garage of Los Angeles Center Studios into a zombified Reefer Madness simulation. The Reefer Madness campaign from the 1930s was filled with tales fabricated by the United States government designed to instill fear in the gullible. A fifteen-minute experience that ran you through an outbreak caused by an irradiated batch of cannabis was tied together with a showcase by Weedmaps’ industry partners. Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch turned up the intensity. West Coast Cure served globs of rosin, Wizard Trees brought the magic, and Tradionals and CBX lit up the bong, all while The Jack Herer Brand brought everyone on board for a cultural experience.

The event hosted an intimate space to engage with several popular Californian brands. Booths were behind an eery arch guarded by smoke and a couple of friendly zombies. A military official personally warned us of free marijuana being offered inside, but that didn’t scare us. We met him later inside an outbreak simulation that took you through a haunted facility. Inside, we ran past stoners turned into deranged, flesh-eating zombies by irradiated cannabis. Once our tour guide met his fate, we had to wait for BeastMode’s instructions to escape a morgue.

As part of their tour, the Jack Herer Brand partnered with Weedmaps and brought people on board a bus parked in the gargage for a cultural thrill ride and short journey through the history of Jack Herer. Jack Herer wrote The Emperor With No Clothes, which thoroughly documented cannabis prohibition in America. Herer inspired a generation of activists after him. He has been immortalized through a cultivar of cannabis adorned with his namesake. It is a sativa-leaning strain originally bred in Jack’s honor by Ben Dronkers of Sensi Seeds as early as 1994. The original phenos have lasted the test of time, now preserved and sometimes fought for in courts by his son, Dan.

West Coast Cure, founded in 2014, had a gauntlet of Puffco Peaks at the ready. They handed out dabs. We enjoyed their WhiteHorn Rose. STIIIZY and Wizard Trees handed out merch packs. While CBX and Traditionals were grinding nugs to pack in a line-up of bongs for guests to enjoy. Nameless had an endless supply of flower, although they did drop rosin in the beginning of October at the Puffcon event.

STIIIZY Brands brought one thing that did cause a spook. Unfortunately, one QU code for a preroll infused with botanical terpenes on display did not populate a COA. Instead, it only led to a Metrc tag. Outside of an event in the markets this would be quite a scare.

Never a dull moment

Each night will be filled with mystery. West Coast Cure took over the second evening on the October 11th with special drops and even globs. And on the 17th, Traditionals is teaming up with the L.A. activation, which will include a DJ set by Dre Sinatra and a headlining performance by Don Toliver.
